Ageing Parent Carer Project
Project Aims
This is a one year project funded by Disability Services Queensland, aimed at reducing the potential anxieties of ageing carers concerned about the future living arrangements and support for a much loved family member. The project aims to provide answers to the following questions:
- where will my son/daughter live when I am no longer able to care for them?
- whom will she/he be living with?
- will he/she be cared for and supported by someone who understands his/her support needs?
- will the family have an opportunity to be involved in these important decisions?
Who is an Ageing Carer?
An ageing carer is defined as being over 65 years of age for non-indigenous carers and over 45 years of age for an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander carer.
What is involved?
The Project Officer will meet with carers and gather information about the person being cared for, their support needs and the familiy's preferences and wishes for the future. With this information, the Project Officer will develop a support plan; which will become the property of Disability Services Queensland at the conclusion of the project.
The Project Officer will also co-ordinate, and trial possible cotenancy arrangements with people with similar support needs and preferences. These cotenancy trials will provide valuable information in regard to potential future living arrangements once a carer is no longer able to provide for their loved one.
